I think the concept is great, but the execution could be much better. The recorded audio needs to be put on mute, or turned way down. The change in sounds with each cut is distracting to the visual story you’re trying to tell.
Also, if you are doing slow tracking shots (from a sign down to some bikes) consider using a tripod or invest in a cheap steadycam rig.
Since most of your shooting is of stuff far away, maybe a camera with a long lens would do the trick? Buying a new camera is expensive, so that might be out of the question.
I think a voice over with the audio turned down would make this whole idea get executed much better.
Thanks for the feedback, Josef. I plan to keep my video experiments low budget (read: not going to invest in tripod or different camera anytime soon). This video was the result of just walking around and trying to catch something at the right time. If I had more time I would have planted myself in a single spot for a while and been able to take more smooth footage. And I plan to do it all in regular color next time. I hadn’t realized I had the sci-fi mode on for half the footage I got.
I think it’d be a good idea to do a better version of this type of video (showing people bicycling, showing their parked bikes) along York Boulevard in the future to help make the economic case for bike lanes, bike parking.
